The code name “Project 634”, an acronym that should remain in vogue until August, when Lamborghini will present the super sports car heir to the “Huracan“. According to rumors, the official name of the car should be “Temeraria”, information not confirmed but not denied by the Bolognese company. What is certain, however, is that it will be the second Lamborghini super sports car belonging to the “HPEV” range, “High Performance Electri ed Vehicle”, and as such it will be equipped with a four-litre twin-turbo and hybrid “V8” engine that the brand of Sant’Agata Bolognese designed and developed from scratch specifically for the occasion. Although Lamborghini already uses a twin-turbo V8 on the “Urus” model, designed by Audi and then shared with other brands belonging to the Volkswagen group, the Emilian technicians preferred to work on an original project with the aim of creating a unit capable of to combine the linearity of delivery typical of “V10” engines, including the one that equips the current “Huracan” model, with the high specific torque ensured by the latest generation supercharged V8s.
The result is a more compact engine compared to the previous generation “V10”, also thanks to the positioning of the two turbochargers inside the cylinder banks, capable of delivering up to 800 horsepower of maximum power between nine thousand and nine thousand 750 rpm , with the red zone of the speedometer positioned at ten thousand rpm. The latter value is normally reserved for racing engines and not for road units and which in fact contributes to making the “V8” from Bologna a new performance reference point in the super sports car segment. This is also thanks to the choice during the construction phase to focus on a flat crankshaft, with 180 degree cranks and therefore on titanium connecting rods to reduce the rotating masses, while ensuring the highest standards of robustness, and on dry sump lubrication . The central direct injection system also operates at a pressure of up to 350 bar, while the “Finger follower” valve system, derived from motorsport, guarantees the high precision combined with the maximum rigidity necessary to reach the high speeds proposed by the new unit.
Configured in this way, the engine is also capable of delivering a maximum torque of 730 newton meters between four thousand and seven thousand rpm, also thanks to the optimal integration with the electric unit installed in contact with the internal combustion engine. The hybrid configuration of the heir to “Huracan” actually includes three electric motors, two placed at the front in correspondence with each wheel and for which the Emilian company has not released data, while the third is instead an axial flow unit positioned between the Biturbo V8, an eight-speed dual-clutch gearbox and an inverter. A hybrid scheme which according to Lamborghini is capable of generating the highest torque and power values, with maximum peaks of 300 newton meters and 110 kilowatts at three thousand 500 rpm, without negatively impacting the dimensions and weight of the powertrain, while emphasizing a crescendo sound of the endothermic unit which reaches its peak at high rpm in terms of volume and frequency content, creating an exclusive driving experience in harmony with the vibrations transmitted to the chassis by the aforementioned flat crankshaft.
